June-September offers sensational summer weather. The days are long, sunny and warm and the nights are cool and filled with stars. Daytime temperatures rarely top 90, and evenings are usually in the 50’s. A brief afternoon shower to cool things down and create a splendid rainbow is fairly common, especially in June. There is never a shortage of things to do in the summertime either with fly fishing, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking, and touring Yellowstone National Park all accessible right out the back door.

Autumn is an excellent time to visit the Big Sky area. Foliage along the river is beautiful, the crowds are pretty much non-existent and the fly fishing is fantastic. However, with temperatures ranging from the chilly teens at night to the upper 60’s during the day, you need to be prepared for anything in between and dress in layers.

It is true that the winters are long in MT. Often the snow flies as early as October and doesn’t stop till the end of April. But that is what makes the Big Sky/Yellowstone area the winter wonderland that it is. The ski season opens Thanksgiving weekend, and runs through mid-April. Snow conditions in November-December can vary, though the resorts are usually 100% open by mid-December. There is typically a week or so of cold snap, with nighttime temperatures dipping below zero. January and February usually see the most winter storms and offer the best powder skiing. March and April generally offer spring skiing conditions, with warmer days punctuated by heavy snows. Average annual snowfall is around 400 inches.

From mid-April through Memorial Day, temperatures are warming and the snow is disappearing. Some businesses choose to close for this "off-season" period. Yellowstone usually opens for car travel around the first of May. Daytime temperatures are usually in the 50’s to 60’s, with night temperatures in the 30’s-40’s. Snow is possible, though is usually ephemeral and rarely sticks.
